No Cookout? No Problem | 5 Family Activities for the Fourth of July

June 27, 2018 / Local News

The Fourth of July is always a fun day to celebrate with a backyard barbeque, but sometimes all of the planning and busy schedules can get in the way. Lucky for you, there are tons of things to do around the Seacoast of Maine and New Hampshire, whether you’re spending the day with friends and family, or using it for some relaxing personal time.

Sign up for an afternoon boat trip

There are a variety of scenic boat tours around the area, including First Chance Whale Watch in Kennebunk, Finest Kind Cruises in Ogunquit, and the Portsmouth Harbor Cruise. This is a fun, easy way to get outside and take in the scenic coast – and you might even spot a whale!

Have a festive beach picnic

Jump on over to your local spot or take a trip to some new sands.  There are New Castle (our favorite), Ogunquit Beach & Footbridge Beach, Fort Foster in Kittery, Short or Long Sands in York, Jenness Beach in Rye, or Hampton Beach to name a few! Pack a picnic with some festive treats like red and blue berries in vanilla yogurt, or those fun red, white and blue tortilla chips. Bring some little flags for sandcastles, grab a beach ball, or even find some flag towels!

Go for an adventure on the water

Kayak and paddleboard rentals are a great way to be active on a hot day! Even if you’re not an expert, it can be a blast navigating new waters with friends or family. There are a bunch of rental spots throughout the coast, including World Within in Wells, Liquid Dreams Surf in Ogunquit, Summer Sessions in Rye and Portsmouth Kayak Adventures, along with many others.

Road trip history lesson – find the forts

There are a variety of local forts around the Seacoast, including Fort McClary and Fort Foster in Kittery, Fort Stark in New Castle, and Odiorne Point State Park in Rye . Further up north in Maine, you’ll find Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, and Fort Allen Park in Portland. Your day can be both educational and fun!

Last but not least – fireworks!
